I know that many of you are eagerly waiting for this device. As you all know, I got an opportunity to try out all four BlackBerry devices which run on OS7. Now, I will share what I felt about each devices (now about the Bold 9900).

Advert :

I was actually planning to buy this device as well and it was great that  I could try the Bold 9900 before buying it. Well, overall it is definitely an impressive device. I will not deny it. However,  when an existing BlackBerry Bold 9780 or 9700 user asks me, “shall I upgrade my device to Bold 9900?”, my answer will be, “no, unless you really need to.”

Please don’t mistaken me. I am not saying that the device is bad. The Bold 9900 is actually fantastic. It is a rocking device and has that look and feel which is not going to put you down. Alright, I will explain a little bit in detail about the Bold 9900.

The device is quite big compared to the Bold 9780. The good thing about the big size is, you now have a bigger screen which will be quite useful when it comes to web browsing and using other apps like Twitter, Facebook and so on. Well, the 2.8″ screen is still small for watching videos but it doesn’t mean that the Bold 9900 is not suitable at all for videos. It is definitely better than watching videos on Bold 9780.

Another good thing about the bigger size of Bold 9900 is, you now have a larger QWERTY keyboard. It is so comfortable to type on it and I almost didn’t make any mistake when typing something very lengthy. Do you know something? I was previously using the Bold 9780 and changed to Curve 9300 just because of Bold 9780′s keyboard. It is so cramped and most of the time, my fat fingers will press something next to the alphabet I was suppose to select. The Curve’s keyboard has gaps in between the buttons and I was more comfortable typing on it. Now, the Bold 9900′s keyboard is even better than in my Curve. Yes, there are no gaps in between but you do not need to worry about pressing the wrong keys because it is wide enough, even for someone who has fat fingers (like me :P ).

As for the OS, the Bold 9900 is running on OS7. It has a better graphics and also comes with touch screen. Seriously, having a touch screen make a whole lot of difference. Yes, it is a extremely good thing to have a touch screen on it because you can easily tap on your screen to select something instead of scrolling. Probably you will disagree with me but once you try it out you will change your mind. After using the Bold 9900 for a while, I got used to it and started tapping on my Curve 9300′s screen (and realised that I have to get back to reality). The only thing about the touch screen is, you will not be able to tap on the address bar of your web browser to type something. This is understandable because the size of the screen (2.8″). Well, there is no real biggie there because you can still use your track pad to move over the mouse to the bar and click it.

The camera gave me a little bit of disappointment. The photo taken using the Bold 9900 is not up to my expectations. It is blurry for macro shots and I can only use it to take something which is at a distant if I need a clear picture. Some of you may argue on this matter by asking me how many times do I take macro shots. Seriously, that is my job. Whenever I go to an event e.g. this BlackBerry launch event, I snap some photos of the device to upload them to Facebook/ Twiter, and that is macro shot. So, is auto-focus function important to me? :)

However, the video recording did not disappoint me. It was very clear and the voices are also recorded well unless the source is at a distant. Probably that will be useful for me to shoot some interview session or an event.

Oh, I’ve mentioned about the OS (BlackBerry OS7) above but did not elaborate further. Overall, I did not see much changes in the new OS. Yes, there are changes but not significant. Well, this is why I don’t really recommend existing BlackBerry Bold 9780 or 9700 users to upgrade unless you really need to e.g. the current device is too slow for you or your device is going to fail anytime.

So, I believe that I have explained whatever that I’ve tested on the Bold 9900. If you have any questions, please post it at the comment box. I will try my best to give an answer.

I still have something to say about the other 3 devices – Torch 9810, Torch 9860 and Curve 9360. Since this post was quite lengthy, I’ve decided to post separate articles about them, which will be published soon :)

i’m not yet become a bb user but i’m looking forward to use bold 9900. do you think it is suitable for me ?

That depends on what do you need from this phone. It is less suitable for gaming but a great phone when it comes to connectivity e.g. email, Facebook, Twitter etc.

    Thanks,

I’m a 9800 owner. I’m thinking to upgrade to the 9810 or the 9860 just for the experience, power and better graphic. What do you think?

Can’t wait for your Torch review(s).

If you are happy with your current device  (Torch 9800), there is no real need to upgrade. The only reason you may need to upgrade is when you feel that your current device freezes a lot etc.

I’ve not checked the browser yet. If it is good, then that could be another reason to upgrade (at least for me). Will write something about the Torch 9810 later today.

    thanks rodger for the input.

i was looking into the 9900 becoz my 9780 is not it’s ussual self after it went to a ‘white screen’ after recharging sometime ago & the only way i could wake it up was contecting it to Apps world via my PC.

Even i just got this 9780 about 6months ago but due to it’s coming from the BB authorized dealer in indonesia & not the malaysian brightstar – i doubt they will take my BB even under warranty without extra cost.

Other country has worldwide warranty but when it comes to malaysia, the local authorized dealers do not seem have a partnership with these other authorized dealer around the world.

For example, last time the most latest nokia model we could get it much more earlier from indonesia authorized dealer that has international warranty. But it is recognized as an AP when sent to malaysia center – just to recheck the phone status. I even showed them the receipt that i purchased the phone from the authorized nokia botique & not a handphone shop “cap ayam”. So frusted coz the mentality in malaysian company is that if we do not buy from them, they will not help. This attitude not only go for individual shop but the company as a whole.  But if nokia pushes this standardization where international warranty is actually can be used internationally, this can boost motivation for the consumer to buy their product more with this “after service” feature.

That’s how a iphone won the buyer’s confidence. it’s a one to one replacement when there are defects. Software wise there are other much more better smartphone/cameraphone/canggih phones… but iphone “after service” feature is an extra point + the cool apps ;)
