Google is acquiring Motorola Mobility for USD 12.5 billion. Wow, that is a huge sum of money spent. What could be the purpose of this acquisition?

Below is what stated in Google’s official blog :

“Given Android’s phenomenal success, we are always looking for new ways to supercharge the Android ecosystem. That is why I am so excited today to announce that we have agreed to acquire Motorola. “

New ways to supercharge Android ecosystem? From what I see, the direct competitor of Android will be iOS from Apple Inc. So, is Google planning to make their very own phone to compete with Apple? With the acquisition of Motorola, they will now have full control of not only the software but also the hardware.

Well, as long as Google produces good quality phones at a more affordable price, I will be happy with that. :)

UPDATE : Looks like ‘patent’ was the main reason for Google to Acquire Motorola.
