HTC Flyer at RM199? How much do I need to pay for the monthly plan? That was the question running in your mind, correct? :) Today, Maxis has answered your question regarding HTC Flyer at RM199.

Alright, I am coming straight to the point. You will still need to pay RM2499 for the HTC Flyer when you get the device together with the plan. So, what the heck is this RM199 (now RM195)? Sorry Maxis, I have to say that it is a pure gimmick.

Well, the new plan which is called Ultimate Solid is definitely attractive for those who use internet a lot, especially to download and stream. The plan offers you 16Gb bandwidth per month and unlimited speed (up to 7.2Mbps).

Below is a screenshot of the plan :

How do I look at it? Seriously folks, you don’t need 16Gb for a tablet. There is no way you are going to use that much for a tablet, isn’t it?

Scenario 1 : I can tether the device with my computer and download files or watch movies via my computer/laptop. Then, isn’t the plan still worthy?

Answer : remember people, the actual price for Ultimate Solid is RM248. That will be the price that you will be paying after 24 months. Hey, Unifi VIP 20 is just RM1 more expensive than Ultimate Solid but you will get up to 20Mbps speed & 120Gb bandwidth per month. Well, you can also get settled with Unifi VIP 10 which is just RM199 but offers more speed and bandwidth compared to Ultimate Solid.

Scenario 2 : I will definitely not going to continue the plan after the contract of 24 months has ended. So I will be only paying RM152. Now what do you say?

Remember, you still need to pay the RRP of RM2499 for the tablet at the time of subscription. Why not you BUY the device at RRP (RM2499) and just get some other cheaper plan which suits a tablet e.g. Maxis iPad plan which is just RM70? If you need more bandwidth, I would ask why because as I’ve said before, you don’t need a lot of bandwidth for a tablet (unless you are going to stream YouTube for hours everyday). Well, if you seriously need a lot of bandwidth for some reasons e.g. tether etc, then I have no comments.

I personally feel that the HTC Flyer’s RRP is overpriced. I rather pay RM1498 for Asus Eee Pad Transformer. It has a dual-core processor and Android Honeycomb OS. Well, there are other tablets which offer better specifications for a much lower price e.g. Acer Iconia Tab A500 & Apple iPad 2. If I need a 7″ tablet, I will just go for Samsung Galaxy Tab which still has a good spec and will have Gingerbread update soon.

Earlier, when Maxis announced RM199 for HTC Flyer, I had a reason to wait for this device but now, it just doesn’t make sense. You may have a different point of view. So, are you going for it?

As gimicky as these Telcos are nowadays, there will still be people falling for it.
While FaceTiming with my brother in SIngapore, we talked about our iPad 2s. I told him I got mine RM 1499. He told me he got his with a “SingTel unlimited SGD 40/mth plan 2 year contract” with 3G and 32GB. I said great. Then I told him, you can connect to Wifi and surf the net, and that he can’t FACETIME while on 3G. There was a moment of long pause.

implying your brother fell for it? thanks for your caution. In fact, i am consolidating my broadband plans- terminated Maxis already, and this weekend, will do the same for UMobile. Then maybe go cold turnkey for one year on the Net.
