I am one of the many unhappy customer of Yes 4G. I’ve bought my device on the launch day but until yesterday morning, I was not able to use it. Why? Because my Yes ID which I have pre-registered is “non-existent”. Yeah, they had a major screw up since ever since they launch their services.

I’ve sent numerous emails and Twitter DM to them but I did not get a proper response. Imagine getting an email which says, “we have received your email and will reply within 2 business hour” but did not get a reply for that, up to this very moment I am writing this post.

Even when my account was activated this afternoon, I was not informed about it. That is how poor their customer service is. At one point, I decided to dump it but I’ve already purchased the 4G dongle from them. Since I do not want to waste it, I gave it to my neighbour and he told me, “oh, I don’t need that JUNK”. That is how well people know about Yes 4G’s service.

But one thing that I like is about their speed. After my account was activated, I decided to give a try with my new Yes 4G dongle. Well, let’s put the pricing aside.

The moment I insert the dongle, the autorun popped up and this is the 1st installation screen.

At this point, the installation didn’t proceed further. After waiting for 15 minutes, I ran the setup again on a compatibility mode. Looks like the bundled software is not compatible with Windows 7 (although the manual says otherwise). I tried downloading the latest version from HERE but it got worse. I can’t uninstall the software and when I try to reinstall or replace with the older version which comes with the dongle, it fails. Could it be due to incompatibility issue or my anti-virus software? (Any Windows 7 user manage to install it without a single error?)  Luckily I manage to get the screenshots before I got screwed up with the latest version.

Installation complete.

That is the network manager. It was searching for network.

Wow, good coverage (at the top right) from the 10th floor :)

Connecting to the cyber space. I did not wait long, Connection was almost instant :)

My main broadband is Streamyx 1Mbps package and a speed test with a local server (Penang) will show about 0.65Mbps download and 0.35Mbps upload. That is on the higher side actually. As for my DiGi internet, it started off with about 0.88Mbps download and 0.25Mbps upload. Now, I do not need to say. It is getting worse than my Streamyx, even when the network is on HSDPA. When I did a speed test now, it showed 0.33Mbps for download and 0.11Mbps for upload when I tested together with Yes 4G.

Now, do you want to know how is the speed like with Yes 4G network? Below are some screenshots :

That was a speed test with a local server in Penang. I also tried a speed test with an international server. So I selected a server in Seoul, South Korea since they are having one of the fastest internet service in the world.

The speed was still better than my Streamyx and DiGi but hey, it is much slower than the download/upload speed from a local server. So I took another location – Japan.

Wow, it is impressive :) . I also checked with some of my friends who were using Streamyx 4Mbps and the Yes4G is definitely faster. Shall I compare with UNIFI? Well, dream on. UNIFI is definitely faster :P

As I was still having a doubt with the speed of Yes4G, I did an actual download using my Streamyx, DiGi and Yes4G. Below are the screenshots (please click on the images for a better view) :

I was downloading a software using the Streamyx 1Mbps connection. It took 31 minutes and 16 seconds to just download 65% (90.24Mb) of the software. Since it was taking just too long, I cancelled the download.

Then, I tried downloading the same software, using DiGi internet.

The speed was 23.67Kbps and after waiting for some time, it dropped to 14Kbps. I said forget it and cancelled the connection too.

After that, I tried downloading the same software again, using the Yes 4G.

It started off with 255.75Kbps.

And it increased to 316.58Kbps

Now at 458.17Kbps

Speed at 597.33Kbps. That was the maximum speed achieved throughout the download.

The software was 100% downloaded in just 6 minutes and 49 seconds. When I used Streamyx, it took me more than 30 minutes to download just 65% of this same software.

Well, the speed was inconsistent but nothing serious. It dropped and maintained at about 300 ++ Kbps and then increased to 400 ++ Kbps etc. Overall, I am satisfied with the speed.

Hey, but I am still not happy with their customer service team who left me unattended for 1 week :( . At the moment, you can use Yes 4G services but pray hard that you will not need to contact their customer service. Otherwise it will take forever. I might dump my Streamyx anytime because I still have my DiGi internet as back up in case this Yes 4G screws up.

Conclusion : Yes 4G has great potential but it is definitely not to be considered yet for serious business. Always have a backup plan if you decide to take up Yes 4G. Also take note that the service may not be suitable for all because of its charging nature. As you all know, it charge you based on how much bandwidth you use. If you are a person who download hundreds of movies, drama series, cartoon etc, you should consider UNIFI instead.

By the way, please do not take the above as a complete review. It was not a review at all. Shall I say that it is just a demo then? :P

If I start streaming HD videos on my iPad which I intended to do, the bill will be high. This is why I dare not get YES even though my Streamyx sucks at streaming video. Sigh.

What a sad case, after 10 years in my area (not a kampung) don’t even have 4mb line still, UniFi… what is that. To me all this was a joke.
